Lerwick becomes the site of Shetland’s biggest fire festival for 24 hours on the last Tuesday of January!
In the middle of winter, the Shetland region of Scotland welcomes the end of the Yule (Christmas) season with a spectacular show named Lerwick Up Helly Aa.
Lerwick Up Helly Aa’ is a fantastic performance, demonstrating the courage, skill and spirit of the islanders and the history of the island. The event pays homage to Shetland’s Viking heritage and the day-long event culminates in the burning of a Viking longship and a torchlit procession.
