Visit The KIOSK – BÙTH Exhibition
Stornoway’s famous kiosk sold “Gifts, Souvenirs & Fancy Goods” which appeared in its annual catalogue and was a part of the early small businesses to service the tourist trails through the Hebrides.
Due to its reliance on local manufacturers and suppliers, its collection of items was a testament to the idiosyncrasies of Hebridean ingenuity.
In response to visitors going back to the post-pandemic landscape of Scotland to shop for new memories, one collective (group) of artists, designers, and manufacturers speculate upon the merchandise that might be available today or in some distant and better possible future.
In this gallery are thought-provoking and immaterial thoughts about memory; experiments with 21st-century local manufacturing; objects that ask awkward questions about authenticity and belonging; and attempts at recreating long-lost items from the Kiosk’s golden age.
