Visit Scalloway Castle
Earl of Orkney and Shetland Patrick Stewart resided at Scalloway Castle. His oppression of the Shetland people made him known in Shetland as ‘Black Patie’. The accused man was executed in Edinburgh in 1615 after being accused of using forced labour in Scalloway’s construction in 1599. As one of the only two castles built in Shetland, this place stands as a symbol of the harsh rulership of Earl Patrick.
