Now in the care of Historic Scotland, this huge tower house was built in the late 14th century by Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway. It became the Black Douglases’ stronghold, and the artillery structure around its base can still be seen today. It was completed before 1455, and it was inventive defence years ahead of its time.
Threave Castle
This powerful fortress is only accessible by boat and is located on an island in the middle of the River Dee.
